WHAT IS THE BEDROCK OF SOCIETY?

Let me first try to explain how I perceive the expression "bedrock of society". It is the foundation, the underlying force or presence upon which society should be built.

Options are,

1. The individual

2. The family

3. The state

4. The law

5. Democracy

6. Dictatorship

7. Nationalism

8. The military

9. Religion

10. Any other

This is a public multiple vote.

I would go for 1. and 2.

I chose these in relatively equal amounts because when society has completely broken down, for whatever reason, the last resort to trying to recover something no matter how small is oneself and one's family. If everybody starts in the home, there is a common goal of survival, which can emanate amongst other non-destructive neighbouring households for the common good.

I say the family because in more instances than not, a loving functional family delivers a good individual thus allowing for all the other choices to fall in line.

It is also Fred, Wilma, Barney, Betty, Dino and that sabre tooth tiger that has no name.

Society? I think it is based on an idea of something (could be family, democracy, nationalism, cooking, etc.). If there is an idea - there is a society, no idea - no society... or may be I am missing something here...

The law is the bedrock of all societies. Though I hate to say it!
Lawyers are blood sucking vampires, judges are so out of touch with the real world that it would be comical if it were not so tragic. However, without them there would be no functioning society. We can only live together if we have a set of rules that all must follow.
Without Law there is just anarchy.
God knows I think the law is an ass in most cases though!

If the State and the law breaks down and becomes ineffective, through say, the anarchy you mention, the last bastion of protection for each of us is the individual and the family. This is why I feel society has to fundamentally start at micro level.

One can probably summize, that I am anti-statist in broad political aspirations.
