what are you doing for living?

Posted 08-28-2008 at 04:54 PM by rainy-day
i don't know why people judge other people after their jobs. first time we meet someone we ask: what are you doing for living?

how would this help them to know us better? if i work as garbage woman, does this make me smell bad? if i work as a builder that makes me have bigger muscles? not at all

people are trying to make jobs sound more interesting, to give a fascinating answer to the people who ask: WHAT ARE YOU DOING FOR LIVING? well.......my dear, i work as an........and here comes a coplicate title. if is harder to be understood, then is perfect because it gives us a superiour aura.

wow. what an interesting life i have if i work as...sternocleidomastoidiano (which is actually a muscle's name )

jobs give us an activity a way to earn money and it is such a pity that we can't always earn this money we need from an activity we love. and some people (many of them) are doing jobs they hate only because they earn good money and others had simply no luck and had to become garbage people, for instance.

i think our hobbies describe us better, they show who we really are, because there we put our soul and passion.

that's why, next time i meet someone i'll ask: "what activity makes you happy?"

My work and my hobbies all are things that I do with my hands. Example is hobbies, guitar, model building, painting. I love to be creative and my work allows me to be creative in a way too.

Alex, I agree with you 100 percent. One of the most common things to ask a person in the U.S., when you have just met the person, is "so, what do you do," meaning what do you do for a living, or for a job.

This suggests that we are all defined by our work and not by our souls, personalities, intelligence, interests, loves... etc. For me, sure, one way to define who I am is to say a writer and editor, but that's only part of the equation. And, really, writing is only an outward expression of who I really am inside.

I like your idea to ask, "what makes you happy." But I suspect that this is too personal a question for most people, especially if you have just met. Asking "what you do" is less personal and "safer." I guess that's why most people do this.

100% agree with you, Alex!
Watching wood-carvers and pot-makers makes me happy. Nobody pays for that. That's a shame!

Alex, a very good observation. I guess, that when people ask about jobs in the very early stages of introduction, it's probably just a form of unobtrusive "small talk", to help break the ice. The British are renowned for talking in detail about the weather......... another form of small talk. So exciting!! :-(

I admire your thoughts on this whole issue.
