View Full Version : It's The Most Beautiful Time of the Year -The NFL is Back

well folks...the NFL is back.

Philadelphia, New England. Pittsburgh and Green Bay are favorites to advance this year. I kind of like San Diego to surprise if they start well out of the gate.

My Bills will win a whopping 2 games while 4 hours west across my border Detroit will pull off 9 wins and maybe get into playoffs so they are who I am rooting for this year aside - of course - from the pitiful team I always cry about.

Gabber

wow, Bills laid a beating on KC

Detroit wins first of the year

Washington beats NYG and Jets squeaked out a win based on stupid Dallas errors.

Quite an interesting 1st week. I'll try to remember to do the weekly poll by Wednesday

Then I opened it up.

Ditto. I was hoping for some nice autumnal photography.

To address the apparent subject, Peyton Manning is out for the season with neck surgery (again). Indy is SOL for any chance at attending the Super Bowl we will host unless they deal for a superstar of his caliber in record time.

Me? I couldn't give a hoot except to the extent that we might manage to derive enough income to offset expenses. The tax levy for that new stadium and a ton of new hotel space is killing us.

Indy - after Sundays debacle they'll be lucky to beat Buffalo.

you guys have to give Tebow a chance. One of my favourite athletes of all time is Doug Flutie. The NFL cast him away and exiled him to the CFL where he was un-freaking-believable. Then he came back to Buffalo and electrified that team. Tebow will do the same for the Broncos.

the year is already a write-off for several teams but it would be great if Philadeplphia did NOT win because I have always found it offensive when teams buy their way into wins, i.e. dead sox, yankees, phillies, miami heat et al

oh P, be reasonable and straight up. Baseball is money. He who spends the most wins. Your memory is playng tricks with you. Do you not recall the years of famine when the Sox could not match the Yankees payroll? Remember the years in the basement looking up? I can only hope that Detroit and/or Texas can buck the trend and eliminate the top 3 payrolls. I love baseball but it is a joke.

p.s. 2 new starting pitchers and a genuine closer and we will win division next year plus we'll have a hooker in the club house.

Meanwhile, the Bills won their second, which as I calculate will be the only 2 of the year so I will quit watching now.

at one point on Sunday, Detroit was down 20-0 and my beloved Bills were down 21-0. Now, Detroit was facing the Vikings, who kind of suck. The Bills meanwhile were playing the Pats, which is a different story altogether.

Brady was picking apart the Bills, making it look easy but...that changed. To make this story short, The Bills came back and won on a field goal with no time left. Detroit won in O/T.

Dare to believe??????

well somehow the Bills pulled off a win over the dream team Eagles. Could be 5-0 but we are 4-1, which is unexpected. Too many offensive yards against so something has to give soon. Still...awesome

I think the Tebow experiment will be put to rest after this weeks shellacking by the Lions.

Bills shut out Red Skins but if you watched the game it was if the Bills had the mercy rule happening. Should have been 40 -0...weird to watch but best of all it was here in T.O.

Newest rumour has the Buccaneers moving to Toronto as this franchise (like any Tampa franchise) is not doing well.

No one here in San Diego can figure out what happened to the Chargers. Six straight losses, and playoff hopes are pretty much gone.

True, Tebow has been finding ways lately, but they were bad bad bad against the Lions that game lol

freaking Tebow did it again. The guy waits until the 4th quarter. Maybe God is on his side. As for the teams he's beat...surely one of them could have predicted all these qb sneaks by now.

anyway Paul has 2 Colorado teams doing well as the Avs are doing better than expected and they ain't boring either.

The Bills meanwhile without Jackson are half a team and playing as expected. And...in case you are not aware the game was blacked out this weekend not because of a couple of hundred seats not sold or even a thousand but instead close to 17,000 unsold tickets. There is hope for T.O after all

To be honest, I am only marginally following the Broncos. Tebow seems like a nice story, but being over here in Kharkov, I'm not caught up in all the hype. I've been finding myself less and less interested in NFL football over the past 10 years or so.

As for the Avs... nice win over the Dead Things the other night. They've played well the past few games, but they're still just a .500 team that is bringing up the rear end of the Western Conference. There is still time, of course, but they don't seem to have the right pieces yet.

But... how about those Bruins!!

Tebowing is now an actual verb in the English dictionary.

I don't know how far this will go but the guy is inspirational. It helps to have a FG kicker than can hit FG's from 59 yards but...wow. Personally, I think they will get their asses kicked against Brady and the boys but it will be freaking fantastic if they won. No offense Phil.

If not for stupid penalties and a couple of brain freezes, denver could have reversed yesterdays loss. All is still good especially if they win the last 2 games.

Buffalo lost again but as I said at the beginning of the year, I predicted 2 wins. They suck big time and once again over ten thousand empty seats.

KC beats the Pack...wow

Detroit comes back in a thriller. Stafford had been crap the 2nd quarter but somehow in the last 6 minutes he was a star.

Giants and Jets both get pummelled, loved it.

the Pats offence is awesome, almost unstoppable. Tom Brady is a magician. I'd rather they won than any NY team or Philadelphia. It would be great to see NE vs GB in the Super Bowl but I think Pittsburgh and Detroit will have a say when all is said and done.

Detroit is at least a year away. The NFC will send either Green Bay or New Orleans.

Pittsburgh better hope its quarterback recovers by the playoffs. As it stands now, Baltimore is a better pick than the Steelers. It's tempting to just anoint the Patriots as AFC champs again, and they might very well win it. But their defense is suspect, especially against the pass. If Schaub comes back for Texas, don't discount them.

And... there might still be a miracle or three left in the Orange and Blue!

Well, the Lion's season is over. Not a bad run for them though.
Hard to believe Stafford is only one of four QB's to throw for more than 5,000 yards in a season, but most people don't know it, because he was over-shadowed by Brees and Rodgers.

See you next year...Hopefully with a better defense

Today is Super Bowl Sunday. It's a quasi-national holiday in the United States. If I remember correctly, it's second only to Thanksgiving as the biggest eating day in the U.S. I would venture to say that it's a much bigger day for pizza and wings than Thanksgiving.

The game will be played while I am sleeping here in Kharkov. It should be finished by the time I wake up to my absolutely obscene 5 a.m. alarm. (Got to be ready for those early students.) I won't be able to follow each play - followed by 10 minutes of analysis and commercials - on television. Thank God!

One thing I don't miss is the wall-to-wall television coverage of the game. There are football shows on the tube from the moment the typical North American wakes up (even the fools who wake up before 10 a.m. on a Sunday). Usually it's overly hyped, and the game rarely lives up to the expectations. There are exceptions, however, and the Patriots seem to be regularly involved in those exceptional games.

So... from far away in Ukraine, this jaded former NFL diehard will take the Pats. I have a hunch that they are treating this like a mission, not just a football game. Besides, I grew up with the Pats (North Attleborough, Massachusetts) and even worked as a security guy at the stadium for one season when I was 19. Damn, THAT was a long time ago!

Anyway, I hope you football fans far across the big water enjoy the game, the funny commercials, the food... the whole shebang.
