During my recent trip to Ukraine I encountered these dreaded squat toilets.
Can anyone explain to me why, in this day and age, do such toilets exist ?
:Laie_72:

Thankfully I've never had to use one.

It's a public toilet with normal urinals but to have a No. 2 you have to squat down over a hole on the floor.

And me with a painful back.

You should try the countryside in France. It's always only a hole in the floor.

I think that's the point. With nothing but a hole there is nothing to clean but the rim. A quick swab with a mop soaked in disinfectant and you are done! :)

When it's full, simply cover it up and dig a new one elsewhere.

There actually are some things worse than those "squat" toilets

Video: Japanese scientist discovers amazing, inexhaustible new food supply (http://hotair.com/archives/2011/06/16/video-japanese-scientist-discovers-amazing-inexhaustible-new-food-supply/)

On the one hand, this does qualify as “science.” It’s a red-hot (http://shine.yahoo.com/channel/food/the-grossest-burger-ever-made-2498115/)story on a variety (http://www.digitaltrends.com/international/japanese-scientists-creates-meat-out-of-feces/)of news sites (http://inhabitat.com/poop-burger-japanese-researcher-creates-artificial-meat-from-human-feces/) this week (http://gothamist.com/2011/06/16/video_japanese_scientist_makes_and.php). If mankind has finally solved the problem of starvation, you guys deserve to know about it ASAP. In fact, if this catches on, we might even eliminate the meat industry and lower carbon emissions (http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2007/jul/19/climatechange.climatechange) by orders of magnitude. Rejoice at what human ingenuity and technological innovation are capable of!

On the other hand: Dude.

I warn you, what you’re about to see cannot be unseen. If you’re eating right now, stop, grit your teeth, and think of … progress. Exit question via Iowahawk: Isn’t this really just a big campaign metaphor (http://twitter.com/#!/iowahawkblog/statuses/81528361863753728)?

Like finding out where the meat patty in your sandwich came from AFTER you've eaten it?

"we might even eliminate the meat industry "

I think that is premature
