OK... if Rolling Stone can do it, so can GG. I am now beginning the first annual GG Greatest Song of All Time contest.
We will start by taking nominations. When we have a good batch of nominations, I will post a poll with the top ten selections. Then we can all vote for the best.
Have fun... I need to think about which song I will nominate. Be back soon.
Paul (listening to Tori Amos at the moment, but don't expect to nominate any of her songs)

Dancing Queen
The longer you think about it , the more obvious it is that it is the greatest ever Pop Song
(If a song is not Popular , it can hardly be great )
So vote with your heart , soul and feet for Dancing Queen .

Bohemian Rhapsody has to be disqualified because you cannot hum it or easily whistle it in the bath .
Plus , the competition is for straght songs and the sub text of BH is nastily Homosexual . The Latin bit is quite vile .

No worries, I can sing the whole of the BR in the shower even though I have no voice for singing whatsoever. Although I suspect that was the true reason why all my 7 husbands left me. :(
So everyone vote for the Rhapsody, or I'll find you and sing it to you! :becky:

To be fair, "Dancing Queen" must be disqualified also, because... well, because it that nastily vanilla Viking foursome.

Now don't try that ganging up routine .
You should be voting on behalf of the average person .
Can you honestly see the working class singing BR with their arms linked ?
Dancing Queen is the song for Parties , Birthdays , Football matches , Anniversaries and Marriages .
It is a song for kids , those with ears to hear and old people who had forgotten they had legs that moved .
It is International as videos of happy Laplanders , awe struck Aussies and poleaxed Russians confirms .
Gloria Gaynor's , I will Survive is another world anthem .
BR is a middle class crossword in song .
And never forget . Abba looks right, front ways and backwards .

(God's Country) It has to be Free Bird. Seeing how Zep was already taken. Those 2 songs come in 1 and 2 every labor day anyway in the USofA

Just a little side note. This is a very serious matter with real Audiophiles. So in saying that I should also say Ramit, Get a Fooking Life and get that Abba Shit out of here and don't mention it again:mad:

So far Tubby , your selection is in clear last place .
The Police , Beatles and Abba are fighting it out neck and neck .
Stairway to Heaven was quite nice when recorded by Rolf Harris but I hardly think Zep Leddelin are from the top drawer .

Tubby ,
To give you more of a chance , would you like to take back your choice ( did it ever chart?) and take God Only Knows by The Beach Boys ?

Great nominations thus far. Well... most of them, at least.
We'll take nominations through the weekend and start the voting next week. As we can only put 10 choices in a poll, maybe we'll have to have a couple of semifinal polls to determine the final 10 for the ultimate poll.

Monor aside. Yesterday by the Beatles has more than 3000 cover versions, listed as the world's record by Guiness.
My personal submission for greatest song would be "Everybody Hurts" by R.E.M.

What an eye opening recommendation .
The list was not just narrow and predictable . It was also sexist and ageist beyond belief .
One jerk from Rolling Stone with his narrow vision and cloth ears .
On his own admission he could not travel back before '63 and if there were two girls in the Top 100 , I could not remember a third .
Absolute drivel and his choice of number one was pathetic -- a good golden oldie , but no more .
In fairness , we used to have Polls given to us like this but we threw them out because we want across the board recommendations and not lists from failed rockers who grudgingly accept that they are over 30 but somehow still "cool" in a teenage "anxst" way . imo.

ABBA donned traditional 18th Century costumes when they first performed this song for King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden the night before he was married to Silvia Sommerlath on 18/06/1976.

Nominations will continue through tomorrow (Tuesday) Ukraine time. Then I will close it out and decided if we need to have two semifinal polls before the final, or just pick 10 and make a final.
Thanks for all the great suggestions (and the not so great ones too).

You must not be so judgmental Tibble Tubbles .
We all had a private giggle at yout Birdy song but may be there was something special in your life that made this otherwise trite offering important to you
The most important thing is for you to be a good loser . .

I have never even heard of some of these songs that are being nominated as "the greatest song of all time". And some others are so obscure that they never even cracked the top 100 when they were released, so how can they possibly be nominated as greatest of all time?

It might be best if the Wanky Pankys withdrew gracefully .
I think the rest of us are looking for something far more international and music that crosses cultures .
Perhaps our American friends are too parochial and introverted .
Pity , really . Try some of the lovely German Beer Festival Songs to cheer yourselves .
" Oompah , Oompah , Sticken sie up diene jumpah " is a special favourite .

Apologies. I have been rather busy lately and have only made occasional, short visits here. Actually, I completely forgot about this thread for some time.
This evening I will post a poll for the first semifinal. There will be 20 semifinalists, which we will narrow down to 10 finalists via two semifinal polls. The first will begin tonight and run for 3-5 days. The second will start right after that.
The final poll will commence next weekend.

I trust you noticed the self delegated final that took place somewhere whilst you were absent .
It's somewhere in the Chat section .
From memory the first three were Waterloo by Abba , The Cheeky Song by the Cheeky Girls and Whiter Shade of Pale , by Procul Harem .
Something there for every body and nothing contraversial , I am sorry to say .
