Gary Moore, guitarist and songwriter best-known for his collaborations with Thin Lizzy founder/singer Phil Lynott. Moore was born April 4, 1952, Belfast, Northern Ireland. A left-hander, he learned to play guitar right-handed. Influenced by Scotty Moore (Elvis’s guitarist, no relation), Jimi Hendrix, and, especially, Peter Green of John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers and Fleetwood Mac, who became Gary Moore’s mentor. While Moore’s professional career, which began in 1969 with the Irish blues-rock band Skid Row, has seen many stylistic twists and turns, his collaboration with fellow Irishman singer/bassist Phil Lynott provided Moore his greatest commercial and artistic successes. The two met in Skid Row, and Moore played for Lynott in and out of Lynott’s hard-rock band Thin Lizzy for over a decade. Moore’s interests are diverse and his projects many. He has had a long, distinguished career both as a solo performer as well as a group participant, working with a remarkable number of the great names of rock and blues over the four decades from the 1970s to present, including B.B. King, Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker, Greg Lake, Albert Collins, Ozzy Osbourne, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Albert King, The Beach Boys, Ted Nugent, and George Harrison. Gary continues to be very active and continues to travel the world from his home base in Brighton England
QUOTE: “Guitarists have this thing where they’re scared to leave a hole because they think they’ll fall down in it. If you leave that space, if you’ve got a good tone and you play expressively, and you can make people feel from your guitar, they won’t be able to wait for the next note. It creates that tension if you’ve got a great sound and great feel.”
