In the West - or at least in North America - 7 January is just another day, nothing special. Christmas will have already been two weeks past.
Orthodox churches mark the holiday according to the older Julian calendar, which places the date on 7 January. The Western church went with the new Gregorian calendar, which dated it at 25 December. Hence the difference.
Also, I read that the date was made to coincide with the celebration of the Winter Solstice, which in older times was on 25 December. This helped pagan people accept Christmas as part of their traditional celebrations. And it's why Christmas (and FSU New Year) are so filled with old pagan traditions.
Not many of my friends and students here really celebrate Christmas. For them, 7 January is a holiday for gathering with family, especially with godparents and godchildren. But almost none of them go to church or take a religious point of view on the holiday.
But I do know that there are some people who celebrate this day for its religious significance. I know one girl here who is VERY religious, so I'm sure it will be a big church day for her.
I am taking this whole week off anyway, so 7 January will be sort of like the end of my vacation.

Roerich's Christmas, "Hello, most cordial greetings for Christmas and New Year to all our friends!" [1] - like this throughout their lives every year, on Christmas Eve and New Year, welcomed their relatives and distant friends and staff artist Nicholas Roerich. Similarly, there were, and his wife Elena, and their sons, George and Svetoslav. In the artistic works of Nicholas Roerich directly devoted to Christmas two hallmarks of the Theotokos Feasts for the icon of Kazan Mother of God, memorable for its unusual iconographic scheme. Itself an icon along with the other canonical image has been included by the artist in his famous "Perm iconostasis" in 1907. As noted in his study of art, EP Matochkin, iconostasis Roerich - rare for an artist work - gives an example of organic synthesis of domestic and Western European religious art: the medieval Russian iconography with images that inherit the iconography of the famous works of Italian masters "[2]. The vast material of the sources, EP Matochkin shows exactly what the medieval samples served as the basis for this work Roerich. The artist sought to display a single source of inspiration for artists of all branches of Christianity. On the one hand, he took into consideration the style of Florentine painting of the XIV century (master predella Fezo-le). Another obvious reminiscence served as a masterpiece of Gentile da Fabriano Adoration of the Magi "in 1423 from the Uffizi. Roerich depicted saints kings - Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar - brought, led by the Star of Bethlehem, gifts: incense, gold and myrrh. Knowledge about the symbolism of these gifts survived to this day: gold - a sign of respect to the Kingdom of Christ; incense - recognizing the divinity of Christ, myrrh, used in embalming - a prophecy death on the cross of Christ [3].

These same holy kings - magicians magicians Orthodox tradition, became the heroes of the book "Cryptogram East", compiled by EI Roerich, published in Paris in 1929. Reading the pages of "From the Life of Christ, namely, the story" The Star ", involuntarily in a prayerful yearning for" Perm iconostasis "Roerich. Again, sound through two millennia of lofty words "first hand": "What is the star that led magicians? Of course, this decree of the Brotherhood, to welcome Jesus, and to preserve and transmit a poor family of some means. In the face of the earth, not knowing the exact location, we walked. Decrees teraphim conducted every day. <...> Here for a small nursery house, leaning against a rock. Here are the fire and the woman at the hands of Him! What are the signs of this? He handed us the handle and the palm was a red mark. At the sign we put out a better pearl brought us. Convey values and sacred objects, we warned the mother about the necessity of wandering. I immediately went back, going through the same round-up "[4].

It is this - a genuine and credible manner - is a Christmas in the heritage of the Roerich. And in India they celebrated the ancient holiday, do not forget about him in a different cultural environment. A familiarity with Buddhism only enriches the tradition brought from Russia: "Is Buddhist Wishing Tree hung with objects of all desires, not in line with our concept of the Christmas tree?" - Exclaimed Nicholas Roerich in the essay "The strings of the earth" (1924) [5]. As we see, in the literary heritage of the Roerich New Year and Christmas and the Christmas theme is not present random page normally in such cases, the epistolary greetings. On Christmas Day lyrics Roerich help feel a great fascination secret arrival of the Savior. A Winter's Tale Roerich's sets and costumes for "Snow Maiden" (1908, 1912, 1922) dips in the gay world of Russian Christmastime, divinations, and fun games.

Once PF Belikov found a Christmas story, NK Roerich, which appeared on Dec. 25, 1913 (old style) in the newspaper "Russian Word" (Moscow). The story describes a series of miracles that happened on Christmas Eve and all fell down in fear and trembling. However, the next day the most seemingly inexplicable "miracles" have found a banal explanation. Roerich ends his story with the words: "Once we have nothing ever happened. Even the dreams stopped. Special characters not on anything. Signs are waiting! Signs, please! "[6]. And the high sign soon came, never to disappear for the future. Roerich way - this way the true signs and inspiration. At Christmas and Christmas Eve is especially light on their homeland, in their homes and with their images. Let the punishment Bright Castle letting travelers on siliceous Path to the Beautiful!
