I am often asked this question. And I always warn against giving Russian Women lavish or expensive gifts. It only spoils the girls and gives them ideas above their station.

On a simple trip, I usually take a large bunch of plastic flowers. Plastic flowers always remain fresh and springy during the rigours of travel. Also, modern plastic flowers are put together with this really neat, snap-click mechanism so you can split bouquets easily. This means you don’t have to waste the whole bunch on a woman you are not quite sure about.

Increasingly, I notice that Russian girls are always borrowing my black shoe polish to do their eyes. So now I take the little bottles of liquid black shoe polish with the sponge applicator on the top. These they find very convenient and, therefore, a welcome and unpretentious gift.

I'd better kill myself, that's just soooooooooooo humiliating to borrow a shoe polish from a foreign f-buddy to do eyes, I wouldn't do that, EVER.
Instead, get them some eyeliner in the round box by Shu Uemura, that's really the best thing you can find for eye makeup drawing flicks and all that), I know that, because I am an eyeliner person, and can't live a day without it.

How about getting to know the person you are buying gifts for and learning their likes and dislikes are?
How about growing the flowers you want to bring to her or him?
How about taking an art class and making something with your own hands to make it even more personal?
I was always brought up to understand that it is what comes from your heart that matters.
The more you put into the gift in most cases is what will mean the most to the person getting it.
